GENERAL OVERVIEW:
This tour covers approximately 375 plus years of Fairfield history and touches on:
Native American Unquowa tribe and Fairfield’s connections to the Pequot War
The original four squares established in 1639 by the first settling families, led by Roger Ludlow
Edward’s Pond and the Witch Trials that took place in 17th century
Fairfield and her citizens’ role in the American Revolution
Fairfield’s adaptation during the nineteenth and twentieth century as Bridgeport develops into a major city and Fairfield’s connections with New York City are strengthened
SITE VISITS:
You will visit sites including the Fairfield Museum, Edward’s Pond “site”, Penfield’s “Sun Tavern” (c.1780), Burr Homestead (1790), Old Town Hall (1794), Fairfield Academy (1804) and the Old Burying Ground.

The “Great Swamp Fight”/Pequot War in 1637
The early settlement and time as “Mill River” during the eighteenth century
The creation of the borough of Southport in 1831 and its growth as a primary harbor for shipping
The end of the borough and decline of the “coastal shipping trade”
The rebirth as the village and its strengthening ties with New York City
SITE VISITS:
You will visit sites including the Trinity Episcopal Church (1856), Pequot Library (1887), Meeker House (c.1760), Southport Harbor, Pequot Yacht Club (buildings erected c. 1890), Pequot School site (current structure c.1918), C. O. Jelliff factory building (c.1903) and the Southport Congregational Church (1876)
